Safety and prequalification for commercial roofing

COR-certified crews, written fall protection and hot work procedures, and the prequalification paperwork your procurement team needs.

  • COR certified
  • 100% tie-off
  • Hot work fire watch

Overview

On a commercial roofing job, safety and prequalification are part of the scope. Owners and general contractors around Edmonton prequalify every trade on site, and a roofer without current certificates cannot bid. Rain Roofing keeps its safety program and paperwork up to date so prequalification is a formality, not a delay.

This page lists what we hold, how our crews work at height and with open flame, and which documents your team can request.

COR

A Certificate of Recognition through the Alberta Construction Safety Association.

WCB clearance

A WCB-Alberta account in good standing, with a clearance letter on request.

Prequalification platforms

Registered and current with ISNetworld, Avetta and ComplyWorks.

Hot-work endorsement

Liability insurance with a hot-work endorsement for torch-applied roofing.

COR, WCB and prequalification platforms

The Certificate of Recognition (COR) is issued through the Alberta Construction Safety Association to employers whose health and safety program passes an external audit, and it has to be maintained with ongoing audits. Many public and industrial owners require it to bid. Rain Roofing holds a current COR.

Industrial owners and general contractors manage trade prequalification through ISNetworld, Avetta and ComplyWorks. We are registered and current on all three, so you can check our status in the system you already use. We also keep our WCB-Alberta account in good standing and can provide a clearance letter for any contract.

Fall protection on every roof

Falls are the main hazard in roofing, and a flat roof is not safe just because it is flat. Every job starts with a written fall protection plan for that roof: where the edges and openings are, where the anchors go, how materials come up, and who checks it.

  • 100% tie-off for anyone working outside a protected zone
  • Guardrails at edges and openings wherever the work allows
  • Warning lines set back from the edge to mark the work zone, with a safety monitor where required
  • Skylights and roof hatches covered or guarded before work starts
  • Harnesses, lanyards and anchors inspected before each shift

Hot work procedures for torch-on roofing

SBS torch-on is the most common commercial system in Alberta, and it puts an open flame on a building. We treat every torch-applied job as hot work, with a permit and procedure the site supervisor signs off before the first torch is lit.

  • Hot work permit issued daily and posted on site
  • A trained fire watch during torching and for at least 60 minutes after the last torch goes out
  • Charged fire extinguishers within reach of every torch
  • No torching at wood, cants, voids or openings where flame can travel; cold-applied or self-adhered products at those details
  • A thermal scan of detail areas before the crew leaves site
  • Liability insurance with a hot-work endorsement, certificate available on request

Site orientations and hazard assessments

Before the first crew member goes up, we walk the site with the owner or general contractor: access routes, crane and hoist locations, rooftop equipment, occupied areas below, and any plant-specific rules. On industrial and Heartland sites we follow the owner's orientation and permit system as well as our own.

Each day starts with a field-level hazard assessment signed by everyone on the crew. When conditions change (wind picks up, a new trade arrives, the weather turns), the crew stops and reassesses. Toolbox talks are held weekly, and every record stays with the job file.

Questions

What facility managers ask us

Ask your own
Are you COR certified?

Yes. Rain Roofing holds a Certificate of Recognition through the Alberta Construction Safety Association. We can send a copy with your prequalification package.

Can you meet our site's own safety requirements?

Yes. We follow your orientation, permits and site rules on top of our own program. On plant and Heartland sites that can mean owner orientations, permit-to-work systems and gas monitoring. Tell us your requirements at the bid stage and we build them into the schedule and price.

How do you control fire risk with torch-on roofing?

With a daily hot work permit, a trained fire watch during and after torching, extinguishers at every torch, and cold-applied or self-adhered products at details where flame could reach combustible materials. Our insurance carries a hot-work endorsement.

Can torch-on work happen while the building is occupied?

Yes, with planning. We schedule hot work around occupancy, protect air intakes and openings, keep a fire watch in place and coordinate with your alarm and sprinkler contractor where needed. Where the risk is too high, we specify a cold-applied or self-adhered system instead.
